Hi everyone.
It´s hard to express the importance of being here today, not only because of the conexions we’re beginning to stablish but also because of this feeling of taking part at this moment, capable of strengthen resistance against historical inequalities, violence, silence and ignorance. It’s important to say that we are here today fully supported by Secretaria Especial de Políticas para Mulheres, a special Secretary focused on Women Issues, from Social Development Ministery of Brazilian Federal Government.
I´m Marcia Bechara, actress from Kiwi Theatre Company. I also work as a journalist and writer, and have just started a Master Degree process at University of São Paulo, specifically regarding the Performance as a tool to fight Gender Opression and Violence against women in Latin America.
I’m Fernada Azevedo, actress from Kiwi graduated with a Degree on Theatre at UniRio -Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro – and on Theatre and Education at FPA – Faculdade Paulista de Artes.
Kiwi Theatre Company was founded in 1996 and is now working on a new project approaching gender themes that also researches the conexions between patriarchalism and capitalism. Specially at the last year, our company has came closer to audiences outside theatre rooms and near the borders of the big cities. Our group went out to work with these artists of the borders and the ones deeply connected to urban movements like hip hop, and other marginalized artists, economically or socially. The name of our recent project is “Carne” (“Meat/Flesh”, in English). We will show 10 minutes of a video here, showing some moments of this work in progress.
But, before, it’s important to say that any analysis of Brazilian social parameters shows a very alarming scenario for Brazilian women: lower salaries than men at same functions; all kind of violence, from conjugal rape, rape itself, to sexual harrassment at work, passing by sexual and passional crimes, sexist violence through publicity and media etc. Well, you know the picture.
With “Carne” we want to discuss, through specific forms of art, the gender universe, specially highlighting material and simbolic forms of women opression. As you will see, the interpretation is deeply marked by a critical point of view, indicating the possibility of theatrical reflexion over non-dramatic materials, that come from social massive considerations and not only about psicological individualities.
Let’s see the video.
(VIDEO)
In Carne, more than a play we work with a script (partiture?) of actions. It’s much more a scenic piece than a literary text, bien fait.
The first scene brings reflexions from French historical researcher Michelle Perrot regarding women’s traditional role at public and private spaces and functions, along time. The second scene, called “Mirror”, or “Espelho”, in Portuguese, shows a demonstration of objects traditionally known as feminine. In the next scene, actresses says oficcial statistics of violence against women in Brazil. Next, Fernanda reads a very small piece of Austrian Nobel winner, Elfriede Jelinek. Then, the “Unbereable Bitch” Scene brings the performers exercising and, finally, a scene where the traditional machist Bible themes of guilt and redemption, so strong in our culture, appears with music, inside a critical view.
To end our presentation, I’m glad to call my partner, Fernanda Azevedo, that will say a pray from Maria Galindo and Mujeres Creando, directly from La Paz, Bolivia.
Thank you all, it has been a pleasure.
Oración a Nuestra Señora de los DeseosVirgen de los Deseos, amante de la vida,
hermana de los sueños e hija de la esperanza,
protégenos a todas nosotras
negras, morenas y blancas;
indias, putas y lesbianas;
y haz brotar desde la tierra las ilusiones necesarias
para que sigamos luchando.
Líbranos de racistas, homofóbicos, corruptos,
machistas y clasistas;
No te olvides Virgen Nuestra
